- Improve sleep onset and sleep quality
If you’ve ever watched Shark Tank, you may have seen Avinol PM featured there.
Avinol PM is clearly a popular and hyped product – but is it legit? Can it really help you relieve insomnia?
Here are our thoughts.
Avinol PM contains 11 active ingredients, and a lot of filler ingredients. Among fillers is titanium dioxide, which is potentially harmful to human health.
On the positive note, Avinol PM is vegan-friendly and gluten free, and doesn’t contain any major allergens.
Each Avinol PM tablet contains the following ingredients:
- Calcium (45mg)
- Magnesium (200mg)
- L-Theanine (200mg)
- Hops flower powder (UNKNOWN AMOUNT)
- Valerian root extract (UNKNOWN AMOUNT)
- GABA (UNKNOWN AMOUNT)
- Chamomile flower powder (UNKNOWN AMOUNT)
- Passionflower powder (UNKNOWN AMOUNT)
- Lemon balm concentrate (UNKNOWN AMOUNT)
- 5-HTP (UNKNOWN AMOUNT)
- Melatonin (UNKNOWN AMOUNT)
As you can see, not every ingredient dose is shown on the label. Most of the ingredients are in a proprietary blend, which only shows their combined dose on the label (100mg). This is a miniscule amount for such a high number of ingredients.
This at least tells us the ingredients don’t come in very large doses, which cuts down the risk of side effects.
But is Avinol PM’s formula effective at helping you fall asleep? Let’s investigate further.
At higher doses, calcium may improve the efficiency of your brain cell’s signaling.
But at just 5% of the daily value per serving, Calcium is just a filler ingredient in Avinol PM with no significant effects.
Magnesium is a crucial mineral that helps the body calm down and relax. It doesn’t sedate you; on the contrary, it alleviates brain fog and helps relax your mood. 
However, Avinol PM uses Magnesium Oxide, which is the least bioavailable form of magnesium. This means your body will hardly absorb any of it – flushing most of it down the drain.
Hops flower powder
Hops is a natural sedative and a common ingredient in beer. This is why beer makes most people sleepy. 
Hops is also a natural relaxant; it increases your brain chemical GABA which promotes a calm mood. It can also be used in social situations in people who’re anxious, as it helps to lower down inhibitions.
GABA also lowers glutamate levels in your brain. Glutamate is an excitatory chemical that can keep you from falling asleep.
However, Hops’ effects on GABA aren’t that strong, which is why it’s not on our list of the best sleep ingredients.
Valerian Root extract
Valerian is an understudied ingredient with a lot of hype behind it. Many people claim Valerian helps them fall asleep. Even the name ‘Valerian’ sounds tranquil!
But the evidence on this ingredient is thin. The sedation that some people get from Valerian appears to be a placebo effect, a fairly weak one at that. 
For this reason, we don’t recommend Valerian as one of the best sleep aids you can currently find.
Your brain makes GABA on its own.
Adding more GABA through diet doesn’t work because it can’t cross the blood-brain barrier. It also has poor gut absorption. 
This makes it a pointless ingredient.
Chamomile Flower Powder
Chamomile flower is traditionally used in teas for relaxation and sleep.
There’s a good reason why it works so well for so many people – it contains antioxidant apigenin which has anti-anxiety effects.
However, taking chamomile as a supplement powder or an extract isn’t proven to have the same benefits.
Chamomile tea remains a cheaper and more effective option.
Passionflower is another understudied ingredient in Avinol PM. Although it’s been traditionally used for improving sleep, it isn’t proven by evidence to do so on its own.
Some studies showed positive results in supplements that used Passionflower alongside other sleep aids, but not when taken in isolation.
Lemon Balm Concentrate
Lemon balm is a smart choice. It’s not like other ingredients in Avinol PM that have no evidence behind them. Lemon balm isn’t just backed by old folk stories but is actually proven to work. 
It appears to be particularly effective at reducing anxiety-related sleep disturbances. This includes rumination and negative thoughts that start pouring after you lay in the bed.
Keep in mind that Lemon Balm’s active dosage is 100mg. This is a problem – Avinol PM’s entire proprietary blend weighs 100mg.
5-HTP directly turns to serotonin in your brain. Serotonin is a mood-regulating brain chemical. When night comes, it naturally turns to ‘melatonin’ in your brain, which is your sleep hormone.
However, 5-HTP is not amongst our top-rated sleep aids because it has poor absorption in the gut. It’s also known to have side effects. 
A safer and more reliable option is L-Tryptophan, a natural amino acid and 5-HTP’s precursor. Your body can use Tryptophan to make as much 5-HTP as it needs.
Melatonin is the most effective sleep aid. After all, your body naturally makes it at night to help you fall asleep.
If you lead a stressful lifestyle, though, your melatonin production may not be optimal. Other factors such as watching digital screens at night can also reduce your natural melatonin production – making it harder to fall and stay asleep.
Taking 2-5g of melatonin before sleep can help offset this! It’s been shown to reduce the effects of jet lag and other factors that can impair your sleep.
Here’s the problem though; Avinol PM doesn’t have even close to this amount of melatonin.
Additionally, it uses a synthetic form of the ingredient. This makes it inferior to natural melatonin, such as the one sourced from tart cherries.
Theanine is an excellent ingredient and one of our favorite brain enhancers.
This natural amino acid is only found in some mushrooms and teas. It helps you sleep in two main ways:
- Raises GABA levels associated with relaxation
- Increases alpha brain waves which promote deep, relaxed focus
Unlike with the rest of Avinol PM’s ingredients, L-Theanine actually comes in a nice dose here, too. 
How to Use Avinol PM
Avinol PM dosage is one capsule 30-60 minutes before going to bed. Ideally, you’ll want to take it on an empty stomach to prevent the ingredients from competing for absorption with other nutrients. This mainly applies to L-Tryptophan.
Is Avinol PM safe to take? The ingredients in it aren’t known to cause any serious side effects.
The only exception is 5-HTP which is known to cause cardiovascular issues in very rare cases.  If you suffer from any kind of medical condition, it’s best to talk to your doctor to avoid any potential Avinol PM drug interactions.
What do Others Say?
As we said, Avinol PM gained most of its popularity from Shark Tank.
However, most Avinol PM reviews don’t look glamurous. One person complained about unauthorized charges from Avinol PM’s company on their credit card.
Another user mentioned how Avinol PM worked, but after 4 days they started experiencing “headaches and insomnia,” ironically.
Apart from a few positive reviews on this supplement, most of them report disappointing results from using it.
Cost & Where to Buy?
Avinol PM extra strength comes with 30 tablets and costs $44.39.
Avinol PM is available over the counter on Amazon and CVS Pharmacy, as well as in stores such as Walmart, Costco and Walgreens.
At one point, Avinol PM offered a 18-day trial, but only if you bought it from the official website. This isn’t recommended by many users who claimed they had recurring credit card charges from the company.
Thus, buying Avinol PM from Amazon is the best option if you’re convinced that this is a product for you.
Avinol PM Review Conclusion
So that concludes our Avinol PM review.
Is Avinol PM any good? Well, while it has a few decent ingredients – including L-Theanine, Lemon Balm, and Melatonin – the rest of the formula isn’t proven to aid sleep.
Additionally, many of the ingredients come in unknown doses, which prevents us from assessing their effects. The ingredients with known doses are all underdosed with the exception of L-Theanine. As a result, they’re ineffective.
And since it costs more than many of the best sleep supplements on the market, we don’t feel Avinol PM is a great value for money overall.
